Walden Ponds, Boulder County

Whether you are just visiting Boulder or are a longtime resident, there are many great opportunities for finding birds amidst great scenery. Let us pick you up at your hotel or home and spend a few hours or all day exploring the birdlife we can find on more than 100 miles of trails and 35,000 acres of public open space.

One of our favorite spots is Walden Ponds located along Boulder Creek just 20 minutes east of downtown Boulder. One of the most popular birding spots in Boulder County, Walden ponds is a remarkable story of reclamation of habitat. Originally a series of industrial gravel pits, Walden Pond was transformed in the 1970s into a wetland wildlife habitat that has now hosted more than 270 different bird species. It's a birder's paradise with flat walking on trails which interlace the many ponds.

Another feature of Boulder is the many interesting foothills canyons that border the city's western edges. These include Gregory Canyon or the Mesa Trail where we'll look for birds that prefer foothills habitat.

Another good Boulder-based birding adventures starts with a hike along a flat smooth trail along South St. Vrain Creek near Lyons followed by a visit to the fantastic bird feeders in the small mountain town of Allenspark.

Depending on our destinations, we may do walking on moderately smooth trails with some rocky sections. Our total distance can be scaled to meet your preferences.

All of our adventures can be customized--do you want to hike a lot or just a little?  Do you want to see specific birds or just enjoy anything we find?  Are you interested in birding and want help getting started?  Do you have small children?  We can adapt to YOUR needs and this is YOUR adventure! A Birder's Guide to Colorado by Harold Holt says,

"The college town of Boulder is situated on the plains at the very foot of the mountains.  Within a short distance from the city it is possible to find many different habitats ranging from mountain forests to prairie grasslands and ponds, which translates into a great variety of birds."  This is certainly true as more than 400 different species of birds have been recording in Boulder County (over 80% of the total Colorado list!)
