During a recent, mostly non-birding swing through central Colorado, we stopped to check on a spot in Chaffee County that has traditionally had nesting Lewis’s Woodpecker. These interesting birds have been nesting in large cottonwood trees in the middle of a residential neighborhood. After parking, we spotted a nest hole almost immediately and could see one young bird poking its head out and calling (for more food, presumably!) It wasn’t long before an adult bird showed up…
